Vital Safety Tips for Home Improvement Projects

By Sadiya Anjum

Taking on Home Improvement projects by yourself can save you money as well as give your creative streak a boost. But you need to be cautious and prevent your happy project from turning disastrous! Practicing safety when working can save you from a small cut to a serious injury. Depending on the kind of project you take on, you need to follow the various safety rules that go with it.

As a general rule, learn to protect all parts of your body from harm. Beginning with your eyes, avoid wearing contact lenses and put on safety glasses. These will protect you from any small particles flying into your eyes. If working with chemicals or vaporous substances, wear chemical splash goggles that will protect you from any chemical splashes, fumes, mist, vapors etc. To protect your ears from deafening noise, use ear muffs. Even if you get used to the loud noise, it does not mean that the ear is not being damaged.

To prevent yourself from inhaling minute dust particles or fume, wear an appropriate mask. Respirators of different kinds are available and depending on the kind of job/ substances you will be using, ask the salesperson at a store to help you pick out the right protection for your lungs. Never smoke while working as it will increase the chances of inhaling other particles/ fumes, and not to forget, the risk of causing a fire.

For projects where there may be debris flying all over, it is best to get a hard hat/ helmet for yourself. Invest in a good pair of gloves (nitrile, rubber, polyvinyl chloride, etc.) specific to the kind of job you are doing. Make sure that they fit you correctly so you can do your job better. Wash your gloves in warm water and soap, and then allow them to air dry before using them again or putting them away. Your gloves will last longer if you take care of them. Wear appropriate shoes that will protect you while working. Wear the right kind of clothes which cover you completely and are not too loose. Your work clothes should ideally not be from your everyday wardrobe. Don’t put your dirty clothes with the rest of the laundry especially after having worked with chemicals, wash them separately.

Protecting your body alone is not sufficient as you need to follow other general safety guidelines. Following simple instructions can prevent even others around you from harm. Always dispose waste properly. Rags dipped in solvents must be put away in air tight containers and then thrown out as they may catch fire spontaneously. After having completed your work, make sure you wash yourself well especially before eating. Munching on anything while working is prohibited.

Make sure that the area you work in is well-ventilated especially when working with chemicals. Work outside if possible. Your work area must also have sufficient lighting for obvious reasons. Use the right tools for every job. Taking short cuts and using the wrong tools can waste your time or you may land up hurting yourself. Same goes for chemicals: unless the label says so, do not get innovative and mix different chemicals.

Plus, keeping your work area clean and organized as well as storing equipments, tools and chemicals appropriately can save you a lot of trouble and prevent accidents. Now the most dreaded suggestion of all: read the instructions. Skipping lines or thinking you know it all is not going to help. Read instructions on tool-kits and labels of chemicals so you can not just be safe but also use the equipments and products effectively.

It may seem like a lot needs to be done just to keep your self out of harm’s way. But the guidelines provided are not hard to follow and keeping them in mind can prevent huge disasters. Home Improvement projects should be an enjoyable experience, so keep it that way.
